Doesn’t removing gel damage my nails?

When done properly gel should strengthen not weaken your nails.  So what causes nail brittleness associated with gel manicures?  There are many ways to remove gel and the health of your nail requires proper technique.   Whatever technique your technician uses, the important thing is that there is as little scraping or filing of the nail bed as possible.  When done properly it is easy to have beautiful nails without compromising the health of your nails.

So how can I tell if my nails are being damaged?

Here are a few things to look for:

  1. Visible pits
  2. Scrapes
  3. Cracks
  4. White spots
  5. Thinning of the nails

These are all sign of improper gel removal. This is NOT a natural part of the gel nail process!

It is common to blame white spots on the acetone used to soak off gel. No amount of exposure to acetone will leave a mark on your nail. Acetone evaporates before it can penetrate the nail barrier.

Proper soak-off technique can take anywhere from 15 min. to 1 hour. The bond needs to be completely dissolved so the polish can be wiped off easily.  As a result of miseducation and impatience the polish ends up being peeled, ripped or scraped off, thus damaging the nail bed.

How can gel nails leave my nails stronger?

According to Nail Magazine, most technicians agree that filing is the quickest and easiest way to remove gel nail polish. This can seem scary to your average salon goer but, contrary to common misconception, this technique results in virtually NO nail damage. If nails aren’t lifting you can simply remove the color coats, leaving the clear base coat on (I even do two clear coats for thicker stronger nails).

Only removing the color protects your nails from soaking and over filing. The base coat acts as a buffer between the drill and your nails. Your nails will get thicker and stronger over time as the base coats continues to be added. As long as there is no lifting of the nails this process can be continued indefinitely resulting in ZERO damage to the nail bed.
